When you met Brad’s gaze, his eyes were bright and a smile was spread across his face. “Look at me,” you laughed, shaking your head. “I think my brain’s turned to mush, too. ![]() You tried saying something else, but it was your turn to struggle to gather your thoughts. “If you’re going to say that I think you’re going to say…” you trailed, reaching for Brad’s hand. “I love you, too, Brad. “I just–I want you to know–you should have heard this a long time ago–I thought you should know-” You nudged his side when he seemed to be stuck on gathering his thoughts. “Brad?” you asked when he hadn’t said anything else. He couldn’t imagine his life without you. You laughed, a sound Brad thought was like a beaming light in the midst of all the chaos. ![]() “I–I don’t know–I don’t-” Brad stammered. “God, I sound like an idiot. You raised an eyebrow at him, waiting for him to continue. “And that’s still bad? Believe me, I panic on the inside every time we’re in combat. “You didn’t seem very panicked when you were trying to keep me awake.” “I panicked.” he shook his head, massaging his temple. “I shouldn’t have panicked.” You shrugged. “I’m not dead, so that counts for something, right?” You looked over at him, studying his movements. “Are you okay, though?” It was a few more moments before Brad spoke again. “(Y/N)-” he began, but then cut himself off. He seemed to be gathering his thoughts, struggling to come up with a comprehensible string of words. It was just you, Brad, and the occasional snippet of conversation from another humvee. Neither of you said anything for a while. He climbed up to the top of the humvee with you as you kept your eye on the landscape. You would let Brad find you on his own, figure out his problem on his own terms.īrad came up to you a few night later, while you were on watch. It didn’t do anyone any good if Brad wasn’t in his right mind. And when something was off with Brad, no one could reach him. You knew something was off when Brad hadn’t returned your wave. You know that look, you do not want to be in the path of her frown.”īrad didn’t answer, and Ray sighed exasperatedly. “I’m serious, Brad! (Y/N) knows something’s up with you she looks like she’s about to go all mother-hen on someone. Brad cared for you, didn’t he? He cared for you a little more and a little differently than his own men. He looked over at you, and back to Brad again, putting two and two together. Ray stared at Brad, watching how his jaw clenched tightly. Ray waved back with a smile of his own, but Brad stayed still. He noticed how when you sat down, you glanced over to where he and Ray were seated, giving the two of you a small wave. “Great. ‘Cause I think (Y/N)’s ready to see you.” Ray gestured to where you were, slowly limping your way around Doc’s camo netting. “Look, she’s even up and moving again!”īrad studied you as you tested out your wounded leg, hopping around on your good leg to support yourself. Besides, it was a leg wound, and I don’t think that the piece of metal hit anything vital.” You okay?” Ray asked when Gabe had gone out of earshot. “I’m gonna go see if Doc says she’s okay to visit.” Gabe patted Brad on the shoulder and walked off. Nothing kept him occupied long enough though. Your best friends Ray and Gabe noticed too, and tried to get him to sit down, take a breather, get a drink of water. Those few hours while you were under Doc’s care were the most restless Brad thought he’d ever been. I’ll come get you when she wakes up.” Doc reassured him softly. He gave you one last look, wanting to do something, anything. He was supposed to carry you happily up a hill to a nice picnic or something, not up a hill to a humvee while being shot at. “Alright, lift on three one, two, three, up!”īrad didn’t want to carry you like this, all tired and bloodied. How was he going to tell you his deepest secrets? The ones that he hadn’t even told anyone at all? Were you ever going to know how much he enjoyed your company? How much he loved you?īoy, he was head-over-heels in love with you and he didn’t realize how much he loved you until now. ![]() He struggled to help stem your bleeding as Doc worked on your wound, but there was just so much blood. Your shrapnel wound didn’t seem too bad, but he knew better than to assume. He saw you go down, but grew worried when you hadn’t gotten back up again. But the next moment you were lying in the dirt in pain, calling out for a corpsman to patch you up.īrad reached you first, tapping your face to keep your fluttering eyes open. One moment you were fine, shooting alongside your fellow Marines. If someone had told Brad that getting hit was quick and painful, they were absolutely right. ![]()
